Title: Keyboard advice
Post by: JoeB361 on August 23, 2012, 06:01:01 PM
Recently got some money for doing decently in GSCEs, I figure its time to upgrade PC stuff :)
I've had a few suggestions of keyboards before, but im wondering how much is a good amount to spend.
Is it worth it to go for mechanical keys? Is there a noticeable difference?
And is worth getting backlit keys? I play at night when it's dark quite a lot. But there is a £40 difference between two razer keyboards, and the only difference is backlit keys.
Also not sure whether to get a hard or soft mouse mat.
Cheers :)

Ive read alot on mechanical keys, and from what ive heard they have a much nicer "feel" to them and last longer. There is a major difference in them and normal membrane keyboards though, and major difference in the type of switch used (MX red / black / blues etc)

I suggest reading up on the different type of mechanical switches as some are said to be better for FPS / RTS / Typing etc. Just google it and you'll find some.

Do you need it? mm, unless your playing at a highly competitive level its pretty neglible i think (compared to a normal membrane keyboard) theres a big difference in keyboard but it doesnt make a big difference to your play :P (unlike say £5 mouse vs gaming mouse, which can do that)

Backlit keyboard - Ive owned one for well over a year and i fucking loveeeeeeeee it. Personally because i sit in the dark for extended periods while gaming (wife sleeping in the room) and it does 2 things for me

1) Lights up the keys (and my mouse, and my old headset xD all had lights) so i can see them and be accurate in the dark.
2) Lights up my room enough so i dont get eye strain from staring at a screen in pitch black.
Bonus: My keyboard lets me choose whatever color i want, Pink ftw.

So..Backlit is awesome if u game in the dark

Exactly the info I was looking for, thanks a lot :)
Seeing how mechanical keys cost a lot more, I will probably go for a regular backlit keyboard
How about this? http://www.razerzone.com/gb-en/store/razer-deathstalker
Depending on the price (price and release date not out yet)

although i do have a backlit keyboard, i dont rly need it...i already know where all the keys i need are located so i never look at my keyboard, except when i have to clean it once in a blue moon...if you don't mind the price difference go for the backlit one, if you do mind though just get one without those fancy lights as you probably dont need it...you can put the money you saved towards buying a new game for example or maybe a new mouse pad.

If I'm not getting mechanical or backlit, then surely I might as well just stick with my regular keyboard xD
Im used to my mouse on a desk, so should I get a hard mouse mat?

I have a back-lit keyboard and its bullshit, I never, ever need it...... EVER !!
Microsoft Gaming keyboard, I paid something like €120 for it and its fucking rubbish, with sticky keys etc...

Don't pay any extra £'s for a back-lit keyboard

Don't put that money towards any game or mouse pad, put it straight here: https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=6uMhMF4ywfvjWNRL3qh0m8klxfjem8GnmZ8h_nDWI8iC1INZeHcJknrDVaq&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8da6a0e86558d6153d8812cd76bf2fd83f

LMAO xD

Depends how much u're willing to spend on a mouse pad...the one u linked is actually quite good.

I got this one like 3 years ago and it's awesome: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/786/2/

I't a hardmat and those tend to get quite more expensive than the cloth ones ( I paid 55 € at the time for the Destructor ), but it's gliding surface is unparalleled and it's really easy to clean when it gets dirty...Also there's almost no wear and tear so they tend to last a lot longer than cloth mats.

The Destructor hardmat got discontinued, but there are others from Razer that are just as great if not better:

Goliathus so awesome :3 fucking best mousepad ive ever had.

The only thing wrong with it is a burn mark i had when i dropped a cigarette on it, you cant really expect it to come away with no mark from that xD
Ive spilt a full glass of milk over it and washed it and it was fine xD (i did it with a hot tap and soap but you can chuck these things in the washing machine !! ) Ive had mine for 1 1/2 years now and its still perfect (apart from burn) no fraying because its stitched not to and its just downright awesome. The only reason i would replace one of these, is to get the teamliquid edition, because blue horsey goliathus is epic.

Fucking - Awesome - Mousemat :P

And i agree with the backlit, if your not using it in the dark ALOT, dont bother. I bought mine because i use it in the dark ALOT :P It really does help with your eyes too. :P and when your piss drunk it's easier to find the keys!

Also, i use the control edition of goliathus instead of speed, because i wanted it for RTS, but its still perfect for anything, and i think the speed edition just has a finer stitching to feel smoother.

EDIT: Heres the cheapest non-backlit mechanical keyboard from razer btw http://www.razerzone.com/gb-en/store/choose/razer-blackwidow-2013 . Alot of people swear by these keyboards, they love em.

Razer Lycosa - backlit or Arcosa - not backlit - no difference in price as far as im aware.

Razer Tarantula is a good keyboard, unsure if they make it still or not though... As for mechanical - Blackwidow is by far the best on the market, and you won't pay extra for backlit.
