Title: HELP ME: Want to buy some things :)
Post by: KrisiS on December 15, 2012, 03:08:52 PM
Want a new CPU, GPU and MBoard

CPU: http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/12020948/bundle/intel/core-i7-ivy-bridge-3770k.html
Is this any good?

MBOARD: http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/search/lga1155-socket#aj-b-1731,aj-b-33007,aj-b-718/amount-low=0,amount-min=0,amount-high=388,amount-max=388/sortFilter=3_1/display-list/
(Pick one for me, cheap but effective)

GPU: Cheap but effective, find one for me please :(

Budget is around E500 :D
Can be extended if I manage to sell my Phenom II , Mboard and GPU

Well, CPU is good but unless you edit lots of videos or use multi-threaded applications, then you are throwing money away. I have this (http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/11764446/art/intel/core-i5-ivy-bridge-3570k.html) and its basically the same thing, but without hyper threading (each core works as two). Much better value for money, you may notice a whole 2 FPS difference in games that are particularly CPU intensive.

As for the motherboard, to take full advantage of Ivy Bridge I would recommend a Z77 chipset. I personally have this (http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/11902128/art/gigabyte/ga-z77-d3h-1155-socket-z7.html) one, can't fault it. If SLI/CrossFire is something you think you might go for, then be warned that this MB will only work with AMD Crossfire.

As far as GPU goes, you could have this (http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/12821060/art/pny/geforce-gtx-660-xlr8-edit.html) from Nvidia, or this (http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/12721805/art/vtx3d/radeon-hd-7870-x-edition.html) from AMD.

Hope this helps

By buying the i7 as opposed to the i5 you pointed out am I not future proofing a bit longer?
I wouldn't be completely against the idea of streaming either, i wonder would the i5 work well in HD with this

I have to admit I am a Nvidia fanboy, I've never had a radeon and dont think I would buy one.
Definitely not interested in SLI/Crossfire at this moment.

about the i7 vs i5 debate, like knigthey said, you won't notice much of a difference FPS wise when playing games, an i7 will give u 2 FPS more max compared to an i5, which is negligible...but since you mentioned you might be interested in gameplay streaming, then the i7 would be a better choice IMO, due to hyperthreading.

i just woke up so i'm still a bit woozy, let me have a look at it tomorrow...think i can put together something cheap but effective

get an i5 and spend the extra money on gfx you will see far more benefit unless you are heavy video editing or using fancy design packages....and i5 and the best gfx you can afford will still be great at those things.. its just it will be really awesome at games

i5 it is  !!
If your breaking my balls though Kirkers because I'd have a better chip with i7 , I'm gonna troll your ass for the next season in competitive BO2.. :D

But yeah, I've googled quiet a bit as regards the two and i5 seems to be much more bang for buck, which is what I always look for.
I just hope it's a massive step up from my Phenom II x4 :D

i5 100% awesome through personal experience. Never had an issue with running any game at max settings above 50fps in conjunction with my 560ti

Keeping it under E500, that gives you E190 to spend on your graphics card. The two that I linked are both about E200 (I didn't think that the E10 would be too much of a problem). In that price bracket, the Nvidia GTX660 or the AMD 7870 are your options. Both are great cards, the 7870 overclocks a little bit better, but the GTX660 has slightly better performance. Look for the best version of that card you can stretch to. The next ones up (GTX660Ti and 7950) come in at ~E270. If you can stretch to it, go for it, but its a bit of a jump.

Cool, there is a possibility I could stretch as far as €270 for the GPU.
One thing I hate doing is overspending though. As the example goes between the i5 and i7 - I would have spent about €100 on something that wont really give me much of a boost. Same with the GPU's , I dont mind spending the extra notes if the performance jump is there, if not - I always prefer bang for buck :)

I have not yet bought my new cpu and I could afford the i7 if I wanted to get it.... but I will buy the i5 because £100 extra for a cpu that only performs better doing things I don't do is crazy.... and anyway you already troll me  :'(

As for GPU I would spend as much as you can afford as good gfx will give you the most noticeable performance improvement. If you want bang for your buck the 7850 1gb is supposed to be king but personally I would forget that and just spend as much as you can....

like this one: http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/12755079/art/gigabyte/geforce-gtx-660-ti-2-gb-g.html

u also get a cupon for borderlands 2 with it which is sweet :)

k, 660 Ti for 60 € more: http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/12754951/art/pny/geforce-gtx-660-ti-2-gb-g.html

^ best bang for ur buck when it comes to nvidia cards

although i'd still recommend u getting the 660 Ti i linked in my previous post due to way better cooling

a fyi, since i know u own an SSD, back up all your harddrive data before u install it.

" The motherboard's Z77 Express chipset supports Intel's Smart Response Technology, which uses a small-capacity SSD to cache frequently-accessed information to help speed up your system. The motherboard support miniature mSATA SSDs, which slot into a dedicated space on the motherboard between the processor socket and PCI slots. This saves you having to use a 3.5in drive bay for a normal-sized SSD in your PC's case.

To use Smart Response you have to set your motherboard's SATA controller to RAID mode, but, unlike on Asus's P8Z77-V Pro, doing so wipes your hard disk so you'll have to reinstall Windows. The manual mentions this, but only in the small print, which we missed to our cost. We would have preferred the option to add an SSD cache later without having to back up and start a Windows installation from scratch. Once we'd installed the cache our PC's boot time went from 47s to 14s, so it's certainly effective.

It's a shame about the tricky SSD cache setup, as otherwise Gigabyte's GA-Z77-D3H has a lot to offer for its price. If you're after an inexpensive start to an Ivy Bridge system, it’s a good buy. "

which is not rly a problem if u're gonna do a clean windows install after installing all the new parts or if u don't have a need to turn that feature on.

Are you sure it wont be bottle-necked Sin? Some of the other boards specifically state that they have a PCI E 3.0 slot
This one only mentions PCIE x16

And is that SSD thing for all the Z77 boards? Sounds really nice :) I will definitely go for a fresh install when this stuff arrives.

both are the same and second gen beats cost implications ..

the board u want to get does support PCI-e 3rd generation, 3rd generation meaning 3.0...guess they just forgot to mention it on that online shop.

And is that SSD thing for all the Z77 boards? Sounds really nice :) I will definitely go for a fresh install when this stuff arrives.

That would require a bit more research but i'd say most do

You have 2 options mate, 3rd is X99 and is fooking expensive  >:(

1. Skylake...
 Msi Z170A Gaming M5 £140
Intel i7 6700k  £290 (on offer at Overclockers)
Corsair LPX DDR4 2x8Gb 2400Mhz £75 (on offer at Overclockers)
 £ 505 Total
Good components and 2400Mhz is supported on MB as standard

2. Haswell
 Msi Z97 Gaming 5 £ 110
 Intel i7 4790K £ 270 (on offer at Overclockers)
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR3 1600Mhz £66 (on offer at Overclockers)
 £ 446 Total
Good components and 1600Mhz is max supported before OCing

In summary, seeing as you have to change MB and Memory the extra £50 is worth it as you get the best Chipset which supports 3x PCIE x 16  slots. The 6700K overclocks like a boss and the memory can be pushed as well.

 Hope this helps  :)

That certainly does help, thanks. Kirks had mentioned the same chip too.
Over £500 for this upgrade though, I'm not convinced it will be value for money from where my machine is at now?
Title: Re: HELP ME: Want to buy some things :)
Post by: Dave790 on December 25, 2015, 10:17:55 AM
Unfortunately the Ivy Bridge chips are Obsolete so you can't get a more powerful one, the L1151 socket and the Z170A chipset gives you options to just upgrade the chip a few years down the line; that is something the L1150 does not offer. DDR4 memory is a hell of a lot cheaper than it was 12 months ago, so you can get slightly quicker sticks but memory speed does not really matter too much as the gain is so small.
Title: Re: HELP ME: Want to buy some things :)
Post by: Dave790 on December 25, 2015, 12:03:35 PM
You could knock about £90 off that by getting an i5 6600K 3.5Mhz but will OC to 4Mhz in about 1 min  ;) Both Skylake K series chips are about 10-15% quicker than their Haswell counterparts.

Hehe, Kirks had mentioned that one too mate :)
I really can't see value in paying nearly €700 to upgrade at the moment...

Sad days ,, :P

Post by: Dave790 on December 25, 2015, 06:07:25 PM
Fair one,it's a bit dear for little improvement but it should be 20-25% quicker than Ivy Bridge.

Skylake - OEM (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/intel-core-i7-6700k-4.0ghz-skylake-socket-lga1151-processor-oem-cp-582-in.html)

OEM stands Original Equipment Manufacturer, but in this context The chip will come in a plastic tray. The Retail comes in a Pretty box that would look nice on a shelf, both contain the same chip. With the Haswells the retail box would come with a fan/cooler that would never be used due to the fact it was shite  :)
